Gather your materials.
Before you begin, make sure you have all of the necessary materials for your quilt. You will need a variety of fabrics in different colors and patterns, as well as thread, interfacing, batting (or extra fabric for padding or insulation), and scissors. It’s a good idea to pre-wash your fabric to avoid any shrinkage while washing your finished quilt.
Pick a color palette for your quilt and gather fabric scraps in solid colors as well as light, medium and dark prints. You will need twenty different 1/4 yard pieces of fabric to complete this quilt. To lay out your finished blocks, you will also need 4 yards of backing fabric, 2 yards of binding fabric or 30’s worth of 2-1/2” strips, and two packages of polyester batting. Your choices here will ultimately determine the size and look of the quilt. Once you have all your materials together, you are ready to begin!
Cut the fabric according to the patterns provided.
After preparing your fabric and gathering the necessary tools, you will need to divide up your material into different pieces that are appropriate for your quilt. Use templates or patterns to create each of the quilt’s squares or blocks. Lay out the fabrics on a flat surface and trace around the template with tailor’s chalk. Then carefully cut out each shape with scissors or a rotary cutter. Make sure to follow instructions for specific instructions related to the type of fabric you’re using (e.g., if using fabrics like knits, use pinking shears).
Sew the blocks together.
After completing all the individual blocks, it’s time to start assembling the quilt. Lay out the pieces so they fit together like a patchwork. With right sides up, pin the blocks together and then sew them together using a 1/4 inch seam allowance for each side of the pins. You can use a regular sewing machine or serger for this and simply adjust your stitch length accordingly. When you are finished with one section, press it flat with an iron and assemble the next set until all pieces are sewn together.
Assemble and quilt all blocks together with batting in between each one.
Once all of the blocks are sewn together, it’s time to assemble the quilt. Lay out a large piece of batting and layer the quilt top on top of it. Place a second piece of batting over the quilt and pin all three layers together securely. You can also add an extra layer or two as desired. You can then use straight pins to hold the three layers in place while you sew them together using a walking foot attachment with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Once all pieces are sewn, trim away any excess fabric or batting and finish off the edges with your preferred finishing technique such as hand-stitch binding or using pre-made binding strip that can be purchased at most fabric stores.
The finished quilt will be a beautiful patchwork of colors and patterns that can then be given as a gift or simply enjoyed at home. The Purple Play Quilt is not only easy to make, but it also requires minimal supplies. With just some fabric scraps and a few simple steps, you’ll have a gorgeous quilt that can be enjoyed for many years to come.
Finish edges of quilt with binding tape or seams as desired.
When all of your pieces are sewn together, you can finish the quilt with a variety of methods. One popular option is to add a binding edge. You’ll need strips of fabric that measure 2 1/2 inches by the width of your quilt. Line up the binding strip along one edge and sew it in place with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Then fold over the binding tape and sew into place again for a neat, finished look. If hand-sewing isn’t for you, another option is to use pre-madebinding tape which already comes with adhesive on one side for easy application. Once you’ve applied all four sides, your purple play quilt is ready to be enjoyed!
Of course, if binding isn’t your style you can also opt to use a neat finishing method with quilt seams. Re-sew 1/4 inch around all four sides of your quilt using the same fabric used in the blocks and border. This method will give you an even, neat look without having to stitch each of the binding strips into place. This is often referred to as a ‘quilt-as-you-go’ technique because it holds all parts of your quilt together nicely. Additionally, this method is easy for beginners and avoids the extra time needed for cutting and ironing binding tape. Your beautiful Purple Play Quilt will be finished and ready to wrap up any special little person!
